Showa University is a medical specialist school with campuses in Tokyo, Yamanashi. and Kanagawa Prefectures.
The university has four schools: Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Nursing and Rehabilitation Studies.
Founded in 1928, the institution that was then known as Showa Medical College was intended to be different to other medical schools in Japan. While most medical schools at the time taught mainly through study and research, Showa aimed to teach students practical clinical ability.
Its main philosophy is that medics should be able to “feel the pain” of their patients – to empathise with and support them, as well as to treat them.
There are eight university hospitals belonging to Showa University. Each has its own sub-specialisms, such as ophthalmology, psychiatry or neurology.?
First year students in all disciplines have the enviable experience of learning and living in dormitories at the foot of Mount Fuji. This active volcano, the highest peak in the country, is a beloved spiritual and cultural symbol for Japan.
Showa University views Mount Fuji itself as part of the teaching experience, inspiring students and staff through its natural beauty.
The institution is expanding its international reach, partnering with universities in countries as far afield as Egypt, Italy and the USA.
The university's main base is located in the Shinagawa ward of Tokyo, along the city’s bay.
The district is home to Tokyo’s longest shopping street. The metro system provides a rapid connection between Shinagawa and central Tokyo’s museums, temples and restaurants.
