Located in the Somali capital city of Mogadishu ,SIMAD University was established in 1999. It was awarded with full university status in 2011. It is one of four African universities established by Direct Aid (formerly the African Muslim Agency).
Faculties at the university include medicine and health sciences, management sciences, accountancy, computing, social sciences, economics, education, engineering and law. There is also an English skills programme.
The university is made up of three campuses: the main campus, Gahair campus and GS campus.
The majority of students study at the main campus and this is also the home of the Institute of Modern Languages as well as the administration building, ICT and exam office building, a conference hall, the main library and the grand mosque.
The Gahair campus is where the faculties of social sciences and law are based. The GD campus is where postgraduate and evening programme students study.
There is a focus on sustainable development projects. The Institute of Innovation, Technology and Entrepreneurship, set up in 2019, has provided many six-month training courses for unemployed graduates.
