Formed in 1950 after incorporating several pre-existing schools, UERJ is a Brazilian university now with 52 courses and over 20,000 students. As well as satellite campuses at seven locations around the nation, the main institution is located the southern coastal city of Rio De Janeiro. Rio is the second largest city in Brazil and can be a cultural and social hub for students, with both a thriving tourist economy and a variety of higher learning institutions such as the?Federal University of Rio De Janeiro.

In 2003 the faculty began offering a Master’s programme in Economic Science, marking the formal beginning of a dedicated graduate school.
Another of the oldest and most respected faculties at UERJ is that of Medical Sciences, which was formally recognised as institution in 1940. Today the department of Integrative Medicine, Family and Community is a key research centre at a faculty which contains over 80 education and dual honours programmes. Established medical practices and research centres connected to UERJ are the?Pedro Ernesto University Hospital and Piquet Carneiro Polyclinic.
