Universidade Eduardo Mondlane is the largest and oldest university in Mozambique.
It was founded in 1962 as Mozambique University of General University Studies and in 1976 it took the name of the founder of Frelimo, Eduardo Mondlane. He was an academic anthropologist who was assassinated in 1969.
Teaching at the university covers a comprehensive range of disciplines organised into 11 faculties and six schools. Distance courses were initiated in 2008.
The main campus is on Julius Nyerere Avenue in the capital, Maputo, where the veterinary and medical schools and the department of architecture and planning are located.
The high school of business and entrepreneurship is based in Gaza, the department of hospitality and tourism and rural development in Inhambane and coastal and marine sciences at Quelimane.
Research cooperation with Sweden dates back to 1978, as does the well-regarded Institute of African Studies and archaeological research.
