Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) became the first university in Brunei and was established in 1985.
It has since become the largest university in the country in terms of student enrollment and the curriculum offered. It has eight academic faculties, eight research institutes and two academic service centres. The university provides multidisciplinary programmes to over 3,000 students.
Covering the fields of science, health sciences, Asian studies, policy studies, education, business, engineering, biodiversity, advanced materials and energy sciences, advanced research, applied data analytics, Islamic studies, leadership, innovation and advancement.
Guided by four core principles (people, expertise, relevance and leadership) the university launched the GenNext Programme, which works to provide greater flexibility in tailoring studies to each individual student’s learning style.
It seeks to equip students with essential skills of critical thinking, reasoning, communication, quantitative analysis and with both a national and global perspective. Three principles embedded in all the GenNEXT modules are entrepreneurship, leadership and innovation, and environmental awareness. The university motto is "ke arah kesempurnaan insan" which translates as "towards human perfection".
Built in 1992, the university has a mosque (Masjid Universiti) which was officially opened in 1995 by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, with a capacity of 1,800. Mainly used for religious activities, it also serves daily prayers for the Muslim students and surrounding locals.
The institution moved to its current location Tungku Link in 1995. Notable alumni include HRH Princess Majeedah Nuurul Bolkiah, HRH Crown Princess Sarah, HRH Prince Abdul Malik and Brunei national football player and Super League football club manager Adee Suhardee Muhidin.
