Sustainability and students: findings from a survey of 2,000 prospective students around the world

The socially conscious nature of Gen Z and the modern student has long been something that has been taken as a fact by organisations that work with these individuals as well as much of the media. As with most area of commerce, sustainability initiatives have been used as a selling point by higher education institutions to market themselves to students. The Times Higher Education Consultancy team recently conducted a survey of 2,000 prospective international students from their Student Pulse panel in order to explore how important sustainability actually is from a student perspective.

The findings cover topics including:

  • Student views on the importance of sustainability;
  • Awareness of the UN’s sustainable development goals (SDGs);
  • How students use sustainability when deciding where to study;
  • Student priority areas regarding sustainability; and
  • Student views on the role of universities in promoting sustainability.
