This week's Final Word comes from a recently returned member of the Labour diaspora:

"To substitute the politics of mutual education for the politics of command and exchange would be to gamble - not, it is true, on the altruism or moral excellence of others, but on their sociability and capacity for growth. No doubt, some will flinch from the risks involved. Yet that has been man's gamble since he descended from the trees."

The winner of last week's competition, who identified Toni Morrison's Song of Solomon , is Ian Robertson, of Queen Margaret College, Edinburgh.
