Final Word

This week's Final Word comes from contemporary American philosopher:

"The objective standpoint can't really be domesticated. Not only does it threaten to leave us behind, but it gives us more than we can take on in real life. When we acknowledge out containment in the world, it becomes clear that we are incapable of living in the full light of that acknowledgment. Our problem has in this sense no solution, but to recognize that is to come as near as we can to living in light of the truth."

The winner of last week's competition, who identified J.S. Mill's On Liberty , was David McClure of the University of Ulster at Coleraine.
