How can universities prove their value to society? What are the best ways to measure impact? And how can higher education solve the world’s most pressing challenges?

Peter Mathieson, vice-chancellor of the University of Hong Kong, speaks to Times Higher Education about these issues and explains how Hong Kong is learning from the UK’s experience of measuring research impact.

The interview was recorded at the THE Innovation and Impact Summit, which took place in Hong Kong earlier this month.

During a summit session, Professor Mathieson spoke about how his university has “engineered” an interdisciplinary approach to research through a “radical reform” of funding.

He added that universities should “involve students” in designing curricula and in decisions around the delivery of teaching.
