I am flattered that a former member of staff recalls my own "Malcolm Grant" moment of notoriety (Letters, 10 November). I remember vainly attempting to convince a sceptical reporter of the viability of running two jobs by deploying a "Poppleton v-c" tactic involving hours in the day and days in the week. The screaming headlines the next day were not quite "Freddie Starr ate my hamster", but they were close. Our teenage daughter was terribly impressed by my subsequent appearance in Private Eye.
As for the two pay cheques: last week and for the 14th time, the University of Bedfordshire's nursing/midwifery student of the year pocketed a sizeable sum - a rather appropriate piece of NHS recycling, I have always thought!
