The opinion piece by Keith Kahn-Harris, "Let's broaden the definition" (23 June), lamented that the research excellence framework privileges peer-reviewed journal articles over other forms of research output.

It is unfortunate that he had not checked the facts. The REF will accept and will assess on an equal footing any form of research output that embodies original research.
