Stood up by my lunch guest (the chief executive of a learned society), I had the opportunity to read THE at leisure and welcomed your piece on spelling and grammar ("The way to infinitives and beyond", 12 August). It was, I think, Baron Corvo who, inclined to let the occasional split infinitive pass, observed of one that it was "split to the thigh".
