If all of York University's sociologists shared Laurie Taylor's elitist views of social policy in the 1970s and 1980s, no wonder there was a schism in his department. Social policy research is theoretical, policy oriented, applied and underpins professional development. In many universities, social policy works closely with sociology and acknowledges its theoretical frameworks.
