In answer to Tom McAlindon's complaint that, as regards Shakespeare studies, there has been "a marked decline in standards of analysis, interpretation and argument", Kate McLuskie, the newly appointed director of the Shakespeare Institute, says that recent Shakespeare studies have displayed "remarkable intellectual and creative energy". But she provides no evidence of an application of this energy to a sound interpretation of Shakespeare texts.
