Steven Weinberg's rant against the Natfhe boycott of Israeli academics (Opinion, May 26) is no more convincing than the Federation of Unions of Palestinian University Professors and Employees' imperative to support it. The FUPUPE has every right to seek to put whatever pressure it can on the Israeli Government.

Perhaps we should boycott Burmese academics because of their Government's abuse of human rights; or Chinese academics because of their Government's attitude to Tibet. What about Zimbabwe? Or, come to think of it, the US for its illegal invasion of Iraq. How about British academics for their Government's support of the illegal invasion of Iraq. Uh?I Oh, bugger.
