I want to stress that Hull University denies categorically offering financial incentives to entice students through the clearing process and certainly has no plans to introduce any financial inducements that are restricted to clearing applicants.

Your article was misleading with regard to this institution. The university is immensely proud of its strong tradition, excellent reputation and its many pioneering developments, and we certainly would not seek to undervalue these strengths in any way by creating a "cut-price" offer.

The university is looking forward to welcoming a large intake of new students this year, most of whom will have benefited from a financial assistance package of some kind. We believe that they have chosen Hull due to its reputation for offering a superb student experience, its academic excellence and its high ranking for graduate employability - not because it is seen as a cheap option.

Vice-chancellor
Hull University.
