Tut tut, John Beckett, for citing (Letters, August 5 ) Southwell as a town with a cathedral (it does not have one - it has a minster) and Nottingham as a city without a cathedral (it has one - the Roman Catholic St Barnabas').

Presumably this Beckett is not related to that other Becket of Canterbury, who knew his cathedrals only too well!
