Victor Lal asks what the alumni of Harris Manchester College are complaining about: the scrapping of history or the college's alleged financial troubles (Letters, THES , November 14). The THES investigation ("Oxford college survival fight", September 26) revealed it was the principal who originally blamed the axeing of history on financial constraints.

Far from being "shadowy", all 30 signatories to the open letter to the visitor were happy for their names to be published. The list of names was supplied in full to The THES , the Oxford Magazine and the Oxford Student . Whether or not such a list is published is the decision of individual editors. Incidentally, Lal knows who the signatories are because all relevant emails have been circulated to him by the campaigning group.
