Jco-organised and chaired a visiting guest lecture as part of the staff development event at Leeds Metropolitan University. So I'm for staff development. But for Sally Brown to cite 3,500 attendances (Letters, November 11) does not of course tell us any thing about the nature of their engagement (my own session included) or the quality of the development provided. Staff development can be funded and facilitated differently within large institutions, driven by faculties and schools for the benefit of their administrative and academic staff, appropriate to their needs and to individual career-development needs, not necessarily those corporately identified and imposed.
