Don't play the blame game

On reading the long list of website comments on the story "Lecturer apologises to researcher for swapping names in grant application", 14 May, I was, not for the first time, astonished at the sound of baying wolves. Why is it that we fix on the one who is supposedly to blame without ensuring we are in command of all the facts? The comments I read were kneejerk howls of fury.

Where have all the independent thinkers gone? Readers should take a long walk around their own consciences before they sharpen their teeth and bay for another man's blood.
