Reading "No change in ranking for Poppleton" (13 November) reminded me of how far we've come, in factitious terms, from "Don's diary" to "The Poppletonian", a move accompanying that from The THES to THE. With the endless encroachment of training, standardisation, management and "Targetts" in today's universities, and the consequent shrinking value attached to education, imagination and trust, how long before we lose another letter and are left with the TH - or just the T?
