Loraine Monk is right to resist a prescriptive dress code, but her comment that students would have less confidence in her if she wore a suit because she teaches media is a non sequitur. If institutional dress codes are inappropriate, discipline-based dress codes are equally so.

Students are more sophisticated than she suggests and demand of their lecturers rigour, enthusiasm and inspiring teaching rather than a particular form of dress.
