It is not the case that "research in some areas of medicine, such as dermatology, rheumatology and gynaecology - which rarely appear in top journals - will disappear from Imperial (College London)" ("University interventions aim to help heal a 'broken' NHS", 5 June).

We have world-class researchers in these areas and we expect them to continue to go from strength to strength. For example, in rheumatology, Ravinder Maini and Marc Feldmann are leaders in their field and have won many prestigious prizes, including the Albert Lasker Clinical Medical Research Award. Their work, which led to a treatment that helps millions with autoimmune diseases, is a great example of the guiding principle of our Academic Health Science Centre - translating research into benefits for patients.

Steve Smith, Principal, Faculty of Medicine, Imperial College London.
