Essential services

I was pleased to see Rick Trainor, vice-chancellor of Greenwich University, arguing for more money for student services.

Integrated student support is essential for all students to progress, not just for the non-traditional entrants who are considered to be "at risk" of dropping out.

Education secretary Charles Clarke wrote to the chairman of the Higher Education Funding Council for England last January asking how the council was proposing to aid and encourage universities to develop comprehensive and well-funded student support services.

Many of us remain keen to see a response.
