Government statistics have shown since 1990 that within five years of graduation more than half of graduates are working in jobs unrelated to the subjects of their degrees.

It is puzzling, therefore, that education secretary Charles Clarke should find one area of study more meritorious than another, in terms of any future contributions to the national economy.

There is no way of telling where individual students will end up.
