I would agree with Ron Johnston that lunches with colleagues, networking at conferences and discussion and collaboration with other researchers can help provoke eureka moments ("Small places matter more than big ones", 28 January).
Unfortunately, none of these important things can be easily measured; fortunately, they cannot be cut easily either. Johnston had better hope that Lord Mandelson does not know where he lives.
