I was interested to read about Edinburgh University moving researchers to permanent contracts ("Edinburgh management and union forge unique alliance..." August 4) as this is something we've been addressing at Napier since 2003.
Our recruitment practice over the past three years has been that everyone is appointed on open-ended contracts (unless in very specialist areas or for projects that last less than 12 months). This means that the majority (70 per cent) of our research staff are on open-ended contracts. We also give research staff the same working hours and holidays as lecturers.
While I applaud what Edinburgh is doing, I believe that Napier has been leading the field in this area for some time.
