Good God, there is more to faith than IQ 1

Richard Lynn has found that fewer academics believe in God than does the general population ("High IQ turns academics into atheists", 12 June). I would expect those with higher IQs to have developed more critical faculties, and those with greater critical faculties to reject the reified God of popular imagination or even a literal version of the deity featured in the Bible. Notwithstanding this, there is still a substantial proportion of top academics (for example, Alistair McGrath, John Polkinghorne, Keith Ward) who believe in a benign creative force whom they are happy to call God. Although not a top academic, I associate with such a viewpoint and, like them, call myself a Christian.

Hugh McCredie, Coventry.
