Martin Conway and Andrew Young (Soapbox, THES , October 31) describe the potentially disastrous move to downgrade psychology as a science subject.

In 1965, I was appointed to develop psychology at the then West Ham College of Technology. I battled to establish it as a science and, mostly, won. Internationally, psychology has been accepted as a science for many years. The present move takes us back at least 40 years.
