As Lee Harvey's former research colleagues, we are shocked to hear that he has been suspended from the Higher Education Academy for sending a personal letter to Times Higher Education (Letters, 6 March) criticising the National Student Survey, for which the HEA has no responsibility. It is a strange contract of employment with such a scope.

We are also shocked that, given its role, the HEA seems to have no place for somebody prepared to express convictions based on intellect, analysis and experience.
