Loud howler time ("Orwell's Oxford paper accused of political bias", March 5). The Oxford University student newspaper Cherwell by no means launched the career of George Orwell. Orwell could hardly have contributed to it - he wasn't an Oxford undergraduate, indeed he wasn't an undergraduate at any university.

Evelyn Waugh, however, is a different matter. His writing career did indeed take off in Cherwell . Perhaps somebody misheard Waugh as Orwell? Not too easy a mistake, but there...
