It is a bit rich for Margaret Hodge to blame universities for the fact that students from low-income families find campus life difficult: it was Tony Blair's first government that abolished maintenance grants.
It is equally hypocritical to impose on higher education institutions the principle of widening participation, yet withdraw from universities and students the cash to make this possible.
