The great strength of the Institute for Learning and Teaching is that it is member owned and run (Letters, THES , August 30). Whatever new framework emerges involving the four teaching quality enhancement agencies, that democratic basis must be preserved. Maintaining and developing standards and practice in teaching and learning must involve academics taking responsibility for their professional practice.
