David Miliband's father, Ralph, was never a professor at the London School of Economics (In the News, THES , May 31). When he left the LSE in 1972 he was a senior lecturer, having been denied promotion, seemingly, on political grounds (he was one of the leading Marxist intellectuals of his day). While he went on to hold full professorships at universities in the US and Canada, his only chair in Britain was at Leeds (1972-78), where I was one of his students.
