Institutional prejudice

I can relate to Liz Schafer's struggles over pay ("There's no good reason for this inequality", 30 June). As one of the UK's 10 black female professors and having been a professor for several years, I still find myself at the bottom of the professorial scale at my university. Almost all of my male peers are paid significantly more than me.

Despite many enquiries over the years, I have been given no particular explanation as to why I was placed at the bottom of the scale initially and have remained there ever since.

Similarly, the table published with the article showing the gender pay gap reflects the institutional sexism and racism in higher education. It is time for us to all stand up and demand equal pay.
