It is difficult to convey the value of grammar to students who have only experienced it as an indicator of social status. Their teachers have failed to show how knowledge of grammar supports reasoning, analysis and judgment. Perhaps as their own use of language evolves, they will have better success in articulating to future generations why they speak and write the way they do.
