The report by Ian Diamond on recommendations from the British Academy High Level Strategy Group on Quantitative Skills is surely to be welcomed ("Cash for quantitative and qualitative change", 18 October).

The situation in which the "majority of graduates are leaving university with inadequate quantitative skills" must obviously be corrected.

They must all be able to appreciate the almost perfect linear correlation between the number of UK branch campuses and the number of students studying overseas for a UK degree shown in the graph for your feature "Empires and allies" (18 October). A case where, for once, correlation does mean cause.
