George Ritzer has a point ("Let's make it magical", THES , July 6). Having lectured at Cambridge University for the past two years, I have often felt as if I am already working in a gigantic theme park.

The Cambridge "experience" attracts large numbers of tourists and students alike. The greatest contemporary provider of themed magic and enchantment must be Walt Disney, so let us invite you all to the Disneyised University: come discover the magic of Cambridge; don't miss out on an enchanting university filled with fun, fantasy and discovery, a world where your dreams come true. Come and live the magic in one of our enchanted colleges... Although there is no link to Walt, it seems strangely appropriate that one of my senior colleagues holds the Disney chair of archaeology. And, although there is no link to the fast-food chain either, our Disney professor is also director of the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research.
