The door against which Herbert Arst and Mark Caddick are pushing is yielding rapidly ("Who's watching over science?", THES , July ).

The Academy of Medical Sciences is consulting on ways to investigate and prevent research misconduct and thereby ensure biomedical research standards. Plans include:

* Providing names of suitable external experts willing to assist employers in the initial investigation of the allegation

* Maintaining a database of allegations and their outcome

* Preparing a compendium of best practice.

The General Medical Council is also about to issues guidance for doctors.
