I am puzzled by Nottingham University's persistence over its tobacco funding ("Notts cancer team at risk", THES, February 9). Tobacco is the world's most despicable legal industry, far worse than pornography, which, unlike tobacco, does not tend to kill its customers.
Suppose that a pornography provider wanted to fund a centre of popular culture at Nottingham, with particular reference to studying The Sun's Page 3, Loaded and top-shelf magazines (which would promptly be nicknamed "The Tits'n'Bums Centre"). Having accepted tobacco money, would Nottingham University accept the funding from a leading pornography company?
