You refer to 60 voluntary redundancies at Imperial College School of Medicine ("London faces mass academic job losses", THES , June 1). This gives me an idea for a question for this summer's philosophy exams. When a choice is offered of compulsory redundancy with statutory redundancy payments or voluntary redundancy with enhanced terms, how voluntary is the voluntary redundancy?
