The British government's attitude towards immigration is profoundly racist; witness the differential treatment given to impoverished refugees and asylum seekers as against the welcome extended to those who might meet the UK's growing need for doctors and other professional shortfalls. Are we now to see this racist "logic" extended to higher education?
From Geoff Palmer's comments reported last week ("Call for fines to root out racism", THES , November 17), that we should avoid racism "because of the damage it might do to the overseas student market", it appears so.
We should avoid racism simply because it is wrong, and it degrades our society.
