Dorothy Zinberg writes about "the invisible college of the Middle Ages, often thought to have given rise to the British Royal Society" (World view, THES , June 15).

In fact the Royal Society started at Gresham College, where it was based for its first 60 years. Its founders included Gresham professors such as Christopher Wren and Robert Hooke, professor of geometry, who also served as curator of the society.
