B. Doherty's ill-informed implication that university teachers do not work as hard as school teachers was offensive (Letters, THES , March 23). I am sure she would find a suggestion that school teachers at least have long holidays without the demands of the research assessment exercise, summer schools, research and publication just as unacceptable. Our two sectors would be better served by a show of mutual support than by petty spats about which of us is more badly done by.
