J. K. Galbraith once observed that the modern Conservative was searching for "a superior moral justification for greed". Robert Sugden's thoughtful review of The Global Third Way Debate (Books, THES , August 17) prompted the idea of a variant.

The third way may be part of new Labour's search for a superior moral justification for the abandonment of social justice.
