As a disabled person I am considerably socially disadvantaged. I therefore welcome government initiatives to bestow the benefits of citizenship on those who partake of lifelong learning. The benign ethos and educational practices found in further and higher education compare well with other means of being socially included, such as voluntary work.
Ultimate salvation cannot be derived from the study of literature or of any academic discipline, but holding one's head high in society is a worthy benefit from education to a person whose options are limited.
