Christopher Hitchens half-laments the absence of an official monument to Thomas Paine (Opinion, June 16). The University of East Anglia hosts a biennial Thomas Paine Lecture. These occasions often explore the fragility of liberty and the contested nature of rights. This, I suspect, is a memorial Paine would have esteemed far more than being set in marble.
