Matter of interpretation

The University of Wolverhampton's student-data returns were not inaccurate ("The week in higher education", 6 August).

The university correctly recorded and reported the number of students enrolled and the modules they took. The problem was a misinterpretation of the Higher Education Funding Council for England's definition of "completion" for funding purposes.

Hefce requires students to complete the final piece of assessment within the academic year for every single module for which they are enrolled, irrespective of whether or not the module is passed.

Caroline Gipps, Vice-chancellor, University of Wolverhampton.
