I am sure that Graham Gibbs's daughters' experiences of poor teaching in "research-led" departments are not universal, but I would be amazed if they were unique ("Research strategy limits teaching of students", THES , November 29).

Does anyone else think it ironic that a plan to selectively inject money into "elite" universities, which must be sorely tempted to spend the money on research, is being labelled a fee for teaching?
