In her response to Craig Brandist¡¯s analysis of the organisation of many higher education institutions, Liz Morrish has come up with a splendid idea ¨C three-yearly rotations of departmental heads in the knowledge that what they decide in 2014 will come back to bite them in 2017 (Letters, 5 June).

A more immediate solution to perhaps a slightly different problem would be for senior managers and executive teams to spend one day a month ¡°on the shop floor¡±, in the administrative support centres or in an academic school, ¡°observing¡± in order to see first hand the impact of their policies, strategies and regulations.
